Fuel Efficiency and Grade Labeling Programs for Automobiles
Program Overview
  1. The fuel efficiency and grade labeling program has been carried into effect by the notification No. No. 2011-81 of Ministry of knowledge and economics department, based on the law on the rationalized use of energy, article No. 15 and 16. The program has been implemented from the year of 1992.
  2. Basically, the purpose of this program is to make the consumers identify the high-efficiency vehicles easily by labeling the grades from 1st to 5th in accordance with the energy consumption efficiency on the passenger cars and accordingly to induce the car makers to produce the high-efficiency vehicles from the production stage. The label also bears the vehicle’s level of CO2 emission to give buyers more information about GHGs.
How to indicate the fuel efficiency for automobiles
The fuel efficiency and grade labels of passenger cars(light trucks ; fuel efficiency indication label) shall be attached on the rear or flank side of the vehicles to be clearly visible by the consumers
In case of advertisement, the following fuel efficiency and grades shall be indicated on the newspapers and magazines, as well as product catalogues.

There is a difference between the authorized fuel efficiency indicated on the label and the actual fuel efficiency
The fuel efficiency means the standard of distance for a vehicle can drive with 1 liter of fuel. It can be used as a guide for consumers to buy the high-efficiency vehicles.
The authorized fuel efficiency is a fuel efficiency by the standard mode based on the driving in the streets of Los Angeles for the vehicle. The actual driving fuel efficiency can be different from the standard fuel efficiency by the road conditions, traffic congestion, driving method, loading status as well as the vehicle’s condition, etc.
How to report the fuel consumption efficiency
As the applicant requests the energy consumption efficiency of the domestic and/or imported vehicles to the test organization designated by the government, the test organization shall test the efficiency and report the result to Korea Energy Management Corporation and the applicant.
